Travelling to Kenya for free!

Are you ready for an adventure like no other? If you're a lover of animals and crave the thrill of exploration, then this journey through Kenya is tailor-made for you!

Even if you've never considered yourself an avid animal person, fear not! My mum and I were in the same boat. Growing up, our family opted for holidays over pets (when our parents gave us the ultimatum!), but our recent escapade to Kenya completely blew us away. Trust me, there's something truly magical about witnessing majestic wildlife in their natural habitat.

Curious how we embarked on this extraordinary adventure? It all began with a little-known gem: the British Airways American Express credit card. After reaching the required limit in spending, I earned a companion voucher, which meant that I could take someone with me for free!*

Inspired by our journey, I'm sharing an itinerary that promises thrills, excitement, and unforgettable experiences for all adventurous souls. Adventure awaits!

Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi

Touch down in Nairobi! While passport control might test your patience, make sure to grab a local SIM card from Safaricom for seamless communication throughout your trip. It offers better coverage than the other competitors, even in the safari campsites.

After picking up your rental car, head to your accommodation for a well-deserved rest, or opt for a taxi if you prefer.

Day 2: Giraffe Centre and Culinary Delights

Start your day with a visit to the Giraffe Centre, where you'll get up close and personal with these elegant creatures. Feed them pellets and learn about their conservation efforts before heading out for a delicious lunch at one of Nairobi's top eateries.

For a slow-paced afternoon, return to your accommodation to recharge and relax.

Day 3: Journey to Lake Naivasha

Hit the road early and head north to Lake Naivasha, but be prepared for a longer journey than expected due to potholes and occasional animal crossings. Once you arrive, hop on a boat ride to spot hippos and explore the lake's diverse wildlife.

If you head to this location (there's a small entry fee for cars), you'll find official guides with a flat rate:

Day 4: Explore Nakuru or Hell's Gate National Park

If time allows, drive up to Nakuru for a thrilling safari and a chance to spot black rhinos, or opt for a bike ride through Hell's Gate National Park.

Channel your inner Simba as you explore the landscapes that inspired "The Lion King" before enjoying a serene lunch at The Ranch.

Day 5 & 6: Cultural Immersion at Maji Moto Eco Camp

Venture towards the iconic Masai Mara and immerse yourself in the rich traditions of the Maasai people at Maji Moto Eco Camp.

From guided walks to beaded jewelry making workshops, from learning about where the shower water is sourced to making a camp fire, this environmentally friendly camp offers a glimpse into the authentic way of life in Kenya.

Day 7-9: Safari Adventure in Masai Mara

Indulge in the ultimate safari experience in Masai Mara, where you'll have the chance to encounter the Big Five and more. Opt for a conservancy camp for an exclusive experience and embark on game drives that will leave you spellbound by the beauty of Kenya's wilderness.

I highly recommend Entumoto Safari Camp, a luxurious unfenced campsite where wildlife freely roams right up to your window!

Day 10: Return to Nairobi for a Taste of Urban Life

Bid farewell to the wild and return to Nairobi for a day of urban exploration. Stock up on snacks for the 4-hour drive and check into a centrally located accommodation in Westlands.

Take a stroll through the Maasai Market or explore the National Museum of Kenya before wrapping up your adventure.

Day 11: Departure from Nairobi

If you have time before your flight, squeeze in a visit to the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage at midday to see the babies being fed, or indulge in some street food delights. These freshly cut fruit bowls were only 25p!

Then, it's time to bid Kenya farewell as you catch your flight home, carrying with you memories of an unforgettable adventure.

Tour it or Explore it

If you're up for the challenge of navigating Kenya's roads, I wholeheartedly encourage you try it! Embrace the bumps, marvel at the wildlife crossings, and soak in the ever-changing scenery—it's all part of the adventure!
