When it comes to building your credit history with a credit card, why not aim for added perks along the way?

Banks may benefit from your spending, but you should gain something too! Consider a credit card that offers rewards like cashback or Avios points for discounted travel. Just remember to keep your spending in check and pay off the balance in full each month.

That's why I swear by the

British Airways American Express Credit Card.

There are no fees for owning and using the card, and every purchase earns me Avios points, which can be redeemed for flights and hotels later on. Plus, there's a standout benefit: once you hit a spending threshold of £12,000 (rising to £15,000 in November 2024) within a year, you automatically receive a

Companion Flight Voucher.

What exactly is a Companion Voucher?

It's your ticket to bringing along a travel buddy on a flight of your choice. Here's how it works:

1. Book a flight using your Avios points (after accumulating plenty from your £12,000 annual spend).

2. Cover the taxes (typically a few hundred pounds for long-haul flights).

3. Apply your Companion Voucher code during purchase to secure two seats!

Even if you prefer solo adventures, the Companion Voucher still comes in handy, offering you a half-price ticket.

British Airways American Express Premium Plus Card

For frequent flyers seeking even more luxury, there's the British Airways American Express Premium Plus Card. With this, you can snag a Companion Voucher for any seat, including Business and First Class. Plus, you'll enjoy access to a broader range of seats compared to the basic card.

The Details

While the spending threshold is lower (£10,000, rising to £15,000 from November 2024), there's an annual fee of £300. However, the rewards are amplified, with 1.5 times the Avios points compared to the basic British Airways American Express Credit Card.

Where I spent my Companion Voucher

Personally, I stick with the British Airways American Express Credit Card. When I earned my Companion Voucher last year, I initially planned a trip to South Korea with my mum. However, since BA doesn't fly there, we opted for something more adventurous and jetted off to Kenya! Check out our itinerary here!
